The European Week of Judo Values/Play for Peace connected Portugal, Slovenia, and Croatia through the values of Judo and also embraced other European countries through a partnership with the European Judo Union.

A union among all, reflecting the building of a future of mutual assistance, inspiring especially the younger generation, with Judo as the driving force for a society of Respect, for Sports, and for Education.

With the presence of Natalija Regina and Spela Voje (GIB, Slovenia), Magda Beric (RSS, Croatia), Nuno Delgado, Ana Matias, and Susana Martins (EJND), and with online participation from Iris Spanjol (RSS), Katja Rudas (EJU), and Eva Alvarez (Creative Data), we held the 3rd Transnational Project Meeting on November 16th and 17th, this time on national soil, at the EJND headquarters. 🇵🇹

On the first day of the meeting, we had the visit of Dorotea Pesic-Bukovac, the President of RSS, who made a point to greet us personally, accompanied by the legal representative of this Sports Association from Rijeka.

The impact of the organized events and the future steps for building the legacy of this project were discussed. Two productive days with a fantastic team! Always working, but, of course, with time for a visit to the Nuno Delgado Dojo at the Estrela Academy and a friendly lunch at ISEG, our neighbors and partners. We’re thrilled to share the latest on the European Week of Judo Values project! Nuno Delgado, head coach of Escola de Judo Nuno Delgado, showcased the initiative in an exclusive interview with Laura Santos on a Sports TV program in Portugal.

In the interview, Nuno Delgado highlighted a recent mega event with the Loures City Council, where nearly 500 school children participated. Olympic colleagues like Filipa Cavalleri and Sergiu Oleinic joined, creating a synchronized mega session across three European cities in Slovenia and Croatia, promoting the core values of Judo in action.

Mr. Nuno Delgado mentioned how UNESCO’s Deputy Director-General also expressed support for Judo, emphasizing its positive impact. Nuno’s challenge to everyone: If you haven’t tried Judo yet, seek out our school or nearby clubs!

This open-source toolkit “Ethical and Healthy Values in Judo” is created by professionals and includes three booklets – for coaches, for parents and for educational and health agents. We are promoting ethical and healthy values through the practice of Judo to emphasize a potential Judo has as an educational tool.

This online workshop for all Judo coaches. It was a unique opportunity to explore the ethical and healthy values of practicing this sport. An enriching experience with 3 speakers representing the 3 organizing clubs of the European Week of Judo Values: Nuno Delgado (EJND, Portugal), Mojmir Kovak (GIB, Slovenia) and Slavisa Bradic (RSS, Croatia). This non-profit sports initiative, supported by the European Union through Erasmus+, brought together people in a week filled with inspiration, unity, and knowledge.

In a mesmerising live video streamed on the European Judo Union (EJU) YouTube channel, participants from Slovenia, Portugal, and Croatia were seen practising judo techniques together on tatami mats. The graceful movements and techniques showcased the deep values and principles of judo instilled in its practitioners. The video was an excellent display of the beauty and harmony within judo.

PLAYING FOR PEACE wasn’t just a theme but also an experienced reality. The programme tried to blend physical activity with the conscious impartation of values, highlighting judo’s often-overlooked ethical and pedagogical essence. Every session and exercise focused on fostering respect, courage, sincerity, and other core judo values.

The EWJV was hosted by three different sports associations – the Escola de Judo Nuno Delgado in Portugal, the GIB Sports Association in Slovenia, and the Rijeka’s Sports Association in Croatia. This event perfectly demonstrated the harmonious combination of diversity, unity, and learning. Every throw, pin, and movement was a reflection of the values that judo instils in its practitioners and the wider community.

The project was supported by esteemed organizations including the European Judo Union, the Judo Federation of Slovenia, the Judo Federation of Portugal, and the Croatian Olympic Committee. It not only increased awareness about the educational benefits of practising judo but also took practical steps towards instilling these values deeply into society.As we look back on the successful event, we can feel the lasting impact of unity, respect, and ethical integrity. This highlights the power of judo not just as a sport, but also as a life philosophy and a tool for societal transformation.The European Week of Judo Values was more than just an event. It brought together diverse values, cultures, and learning opportunities, making significant progress in promoting and embodying the values of judo.

A team of three countries, Portugal, Slovenia and Croatia, with the support of international partners, met at the CA meeting. The conversation was about the main event, which will take place at the end of September, and all the activities that will take place in connection with the European Judo Values ​​Week. During this week, a series of interesting and educational events will be organized, which will take place simultaneously in all three countries – in the cities of Lisbon, Rijeka and Ljubljana. And we are preparing so much more.
